Most recruiters use 10% of what boolean search can do.
BooleanSearch.co.uk teaches the operators, syntax and platform quirks that turn a vague job title into a shortlist — on LinkedIn, Google X-ray and CV databases alike.
- What it is
- A search syntax using AND / OR / NOT, quotes and brackets to narrow results precisely.
- Where it works
- Google, LinkedIn, Bing, most CV databases and ATS search bars.
- Time to learn basics
- Around 20–30 minutes for the four core operators.
- Typical impact
- Recruiters report far fewer irrelevant profiles per search once strings are structured correctly.
What is boolean search in recruitment?
Boolean search in recruitment is the practice of combining keywords with the logical operators AND, OR and NOT, alongside quotation marks and parentheses, to build a single search string that returns only the candidate profiles, CVs or search-engine results matching a precise combination of criteria. It was borrowed from Boolean algebra — named after 19th-century mathematician George Boole — and has been a core sourcing skill since recruiters first started searching job boards and, later, LinkedIn in the 2000s.
Instead of searching "nurse Leeds" and scrolling through thousands of loosely related results, a recruiter using boolean logic searches something closer to ("registered nurse" OR "staff nurse") AND ICU AND Leeds NOT student — a string that tells the search engine exactly which combinations of words must, must not, or may optionally appear.

Is boolean search still relevant now AI sourcing tools exist?
Yes. Boolean strings are what many AI sourcing tools translate natural-language prompts into behind the scenes, and they remain the fastest way to search platforms — like LinkedIn's standard search bar — that don't have AI matching built in.
Do I need LinkedIn Recruiter to use boolean search?
No. LinkedIn's free search bar supports quotation marks, AND, OR, NOT and parentheses; Recruiter seats add extra filters but the boolean syntax itself is the same.
